JOHN KOWALESKI
PRODUCER // SONGWRITER // INSTRUMENTALIST
John Kowaleski is a Detroit-based record producer, singer-songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist whose career spans more than two decades and crosses a wide range of genres.
Whether on stage or in the studio, John brings precision, emotion, and a deep understanding of the recording and performance process, making him an invaluable asset to any creative team.
John’s birth coincided with his father’s first day on the job as a DJ at Detroit’s W4 Country 106.7 FM. Raised among radio dials and stacks of vinyl, John grew up backstage at country concerts featuring the most successful artists of the era. In fact, watching Willie Nelson bring thousands of fans to joyful tears gave John his first taste of music’s transformative power and planted the seed for a life of creative purpose.
At the age of eight, John formed his first band, rehearsing in suburban Detroit basements almost daily on hand-me-down and toy instruments. By the age of 14, that band was performing sold-out shows in metro-Detroit venues such as Westland’s Token Lounge, a venue where he would later return as front-of-house engineer after earning his formal education. The band would evolve and splinter into several mid-late ’90s/early '00s groups in which John served as the principal songwriter.
Over the years, John became a staple in Detroit's independent music scene, producing and engineering several albums for artists while being the drummer and backup vocalist for punk band P.T.’s Revenge, in which he wrote music for tracks like “Anthem of Yesterday” and “Bring Her Down” and penned the lyrics for “Another Day Another Time” among other songs. In 2024, he fully produced, recorded, mixed, and performed on P.T.'s Revenge's critically acclaimed self-titled album.
From 2006 to 2012, John led the progressive metal band Bat On Fire as its principal music writer alongside his brother, lyricist/vocalist Karlos Kowaleski. The band created high-concept albums rooted in historical events and featuring a fictional character woven into each narrative. Their releases include The Death of Solomon Scarlett (2007), The Raft of the Medusa (2008), Escape From Hades (2009), and …And Then Blood Everywhere! (2012), with each project showcasing John’s depth as a composer and producer with a strong storytelling instinct.
His versatility as a touring musician was on full display during his tenure with psychobilly band Koffin Kats, in which he played guitar from 2014 to 2015 across the U.S., Canada, U.K., Europe, and Scandinavia. John also served as producer and recording/mixing engineer for Koffin Kats between 2007 and 2013, helping to shape the band’s raw, high-energy sound in the studio.
In 2008, John enrolled at the Conservatory of Recording Arts & Sciences in Arizona, where he earned top certifications in professional audio engineering. Graduation required internship hours, which he split between two locations: Welcome to 1979 in Nashville, Tennessee, and the aforementioned Token Lounge in Michigan. At Welcome to 1979 (an all-analog studio known for its vintage tape machines, classic gear, and commitment to vibe over everything), John immersed himself in the kind of old-school engineering that most modern producers only read about. Back in Michigan, at the Token Lounge, he fine-tuned his live sound skills in a high-pressure environment, working in a room where he had once stood on stage as a teenage performer.
John’s skills as a producer and songwriter extend to unique projects from his debut solo album Dealing With People to his novelty holiday track “Santa’s Workshop," which earned praise for its rich storytelling, earworm hooks, and tight production. His songs “Don’t Wanna Work” and “Suffering Together” reflect his ability to channel frustration, humor, and heart into anthems that connect with audiences both politically and personally, offering sharp commentary on American work culture and social disunity while remaining aurally inviting for all listeners.
Whether he’s composing songs, revising arrangements, tracking instruments, or crafting a mix, John brings a level of artistry and intentionality that transforms songs from rough ideas into complete, resonant works. As a session or touring musician, he shows up prepared, performs with conviction, and knows how to complement the vision of other artists. As a producer and engineer, he draws from decades of experience and an encyclopedic knowledge of recording techniques to capture performances that are both emotionally honest and sonically pristine.
If you’re an artist or band in need of someone who can play multiple instruments, contribute background vocals, produce records from start to finish, and/or bring a professional yet passionate approach to every phase of the creative process, John Kowaleski is a collaborator you can count on.
